Screened-In Porch & Composite Deck Renovation in Winston-Salem, NC

Project Overview

This project focused on upgrading an existing outdoor living space in Winston-Salem, NC with a complete Trex composite deck reskin and the construction of a new screened-in porch addition. The renovation combined a protected covered area with an open-air deck design, creating a more comfortable and functional outdoor environment for relaxing and entertaining throughout the year.

The project included approximately 300 square feet of renovated deck space featuring Trex composite decking in Saddle, bronze vinyl handrails with matching bronze balusters, a custom knee wall designed to closely match the home’s existing siding, and a lean-to style roof structure shingled to coordinate with the home.

A new screened-in porch area was constructed using the Screen-Eze system, providing improved airflow and protection from insects while maintaining an open outdoor feel. Additional upgrades included a white soffit ceiling, electrical wiring for a ceiling fan, a storm door connecting to the open deck area, and upgraded low-maintenance composite decking throughout the space.

The final result transformed the original deck into a more polished, comfortable, and versatile outdoor living area with both covered and open-air functionality.

The Challenge

The original deck had aging deck boards that required ongoing maintenance and lacked the comfort and protection needed for extended outdoor use. Exposure to direct sunlight, rain, and insects limited how often the homeowners could comfortably use the space throughout the year.

The homeowners wanted to preserve the existing structural footprint while significantly improving the appearance, functionality, and overall usability of the deck. They also wanted to create a covered screened-in space that would feel open and inviting without making the backyard feel enclosed or disconnected from the outdoors.

Another challenge involved blending the new porch structure seamlessly with the existing home, including matching rooflines, siding tones, railing colors, and overall architectural appearance.

The Solution

To modernize the outdoor living area, we completed a full deck reskin using Trex composite decking in Saddle. The new decking material provides long-term durability and low maintenance compared to traditional wood decking while delivering a cleaner, more updated appearance.

A custom screened-in porch measuring approximately 12 feet by 14 feet was constructed over a portion of the deck using a lean-to roof design that integrates naturally with the home’s existing roofline. Architectural shingles were selected to closely match the existing roofing system for a cohesive appearance.

The screened porch was built using the Screen-Eze screening system installed above a custom knee wall designed to closely coordinate with the home’s siding color. This design allows for improved ventilation and visibility while creating a more comfortable outdoor environment protected from insects and weather.

Bronze vinyl handrails and matching bronze balusters were installed throughout the deck and stair sections to enhance both safety and visual appeal. Additional upgrades included white soffit finishes on the porch ceiling, electrical wiring and switch installation for a ceiling fan, and a storm door connecting the screened porch to the open deck area.

The open decking section was also fully resurfaced to match the screened porch area, creating a consistent and visually connected outdoor living space.

The Result

The completed project transformed the original aging deck into a modern outdoor living space that combines the comfort of a screened-in porch with the openness of a traditional deck design.

The new Trex composite decking provides a clean, low-maintenance surface that will withstand long-term outdoor exposure with significantly reduced upkeep. The screened-in porch addition now allows the homeowners to enjoy the space more comfortably throughout multiple seasons while adding shade, airflow, and insect protection.

With upgraded materials, improved functionality, and a design that blends seamlessly with the existing home, the finished project delivers a more inviting and usable outdoor entertainment area that adds both daily enjoyment and long-term value to the property.
