Project Overview

This project focused on transforming an aging wood deck into a modern, low-maintenance outdoor living space in Jamestown, NC. The renovation included a complete Trex Enhance® Beach Dune deck reskin, reconstruction of the original built-in bench seating and planter features, updated vinyl handrails with black balusters, and the addition of a large covered awning roof designed to improve comfort and usability throughout the year.

The new covered structure was built to extend across the lower portion of the deck and included recessed can lighting, ceiling fans, white soffit finishes, gutters, and integrated electrical outlets for added convenience. The goal of the project was to preserve the original layout the homeowners loved while dramatically upgrading the appearance, durability, and functionality of the space using modern composite decking materials and a custom roof addition.

The finished project delivers a more refined and inviting outdoor entertainment area while reducing long-term maintenance compared to the original wood decking.

The Challenge

The original deck showed signs of aging and weather exposure commonly found with older wood decking systems. Surface wear, fading, and ongoing maintenance requirements had become concerns for the homeowners, and the existing outdoor space lacked protection from direct sun and rain.

Additionally, while the homeowners wanted a significantly upgraded appearance and improved functionality, they also wanted to preserve the original footprint and key design elements of the deck, including the built-in bench seating and planter boxes. The challenge was to modernize the entire outdoor living area without completely changing the layout they were already comfortable using.

The space also lacked integrated lighting, airflow, and covered gathering areas, limiting how often the deck could comfortably be used throughout the year.

The Solution

To modernize the space while maintaining the original design, we completed a full deck reskin using Trex Enhance® Beach Dune composite decking. The new composite surface provides long-term durability with far less maintenance than traditional wood decking while delivering a clean, updated appearance.

The original bench seating and three planter boxes were rebuilt to match the existing layout, helping preserve the character and functionality of the outdoor space. White beauty band and fascia details were added throughout the deck perimeter, seating areas, and planters to create a more polished, finished appearance.

For safety and visual contrast, white vinyl handrails with black balusters were installed throughout the deck and stair sections.

A major upgrade to the project was the construction of a large custom awning roof addition spanning approximately 31 feet by 15 feet across the lower portion of the deck. The covered structure was designed to blend seamlessly with the existing home using architectural shingles in a Resawn Shake color to closely match the main roof.

To improve comfort and usability, the new roof structure included recessed can lighting, dual ceiling fan locations, white soffit ceilings, wrapped fascia details, gutters, and integrated electrical outlets mounted to the support posts for convenient access.

The Result

The completed project completely transformed the outdoor living area into a more functional, visually appealing, and comfortable space for relaxing and entertaining.

The new Trex composite decking delivers a clean, modern finish while eliminating much of the long-term upkeep associated with traditional wood decks. The covered awning addition now provides shade and weather protection, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the deck in a wider range of conditions throughout the year.

By preserving the original layout while upgrading the materials, lighting, and overall usability, the finished project successfully combines the charm of the existing outdoor space with the benefits of a modern outdoor living renovation.
